**MIDDLE EAST WAR** | Day 241.

- Iran's Foreign Ministry says senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan, which signed a mutual defense pact in August, are meeting with Iranian officials in Tehran today in efforts to avert renewed fighting between Iran, the U.S., and Israel. \[[more](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=saudi+turkey+pakistan+officials+tehran+talks+iran+mecca+pact&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]
- Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebel group says it attacked pumping stations on Saudi Arabia's East-West crude oil pipeline and Riyadh's main airport over the weekend. The pipeline, reports note, has served as a key route for Middle East oil exports while the Strait of Hormuz has been largely closed by the war. \[[more](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=houthis+attack+saudi+east-west+pipeline+pumping+stations+riyadh+airport&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]

**UKRAINE** | Today is day 1,703 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Here is your update:

- Following Saturday's restoration of full Starlink satellite internet service to Ukraine's military after more than a week of disruptions, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk acknowledged that his company had restricted the service, claiming Ukraine's military had violated the company's terms of service by using it for "offensive drone strikes to kill people." Ukrainian officials have disputed Musk's claim, saying long-standing limits on the civilian service in Ukraine make such use impossible. \[[more](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=musk+starlink+ukraine+restricted+terms+of+service+offensive+drone+strikes&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]

**U.S. GUN VIOLENCE** | Police in Tallahassee, Florida, say a 15-year-old has been arrested and charged with 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder in connection with a shooting Saturday night near Florida A&M University's football stadium that injured 12 people, including six minors. Authorities say the shooting appears to have followed a fight among people who knew one another and note that the investigation remains active and additional arrests are possible. \[[more](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=15-year-old+arrested+tallahassee+florida+a%26m+shooting&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]

**U.S. ELECTIONS** | Federal prosecutors on Friday sent letters to at least 18 California counties demanding that election officials set aside and verify ballots the Justice Department says may belong to noncitizens, with a 48-hour deadline to provide information on the voters in question. In a rare weekend hearing yesterday, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in a related Justice Department lawsuit seeking to stop California from counting some 20,000 such ballots, and said it would rule "as quickly as possible." \[[more on the letters](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=justice+department+letters+california+counties+set+aside+ballots+noncitizens+48+hours&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\] \[[more on the hearing](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=9th+circuit+judges+skeptical+california+mail+ballots+noncitizens+justice+department&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]

**MORE U.S. ELECTIONS** | Citing possible voter confusion caused by a second candidate named Daniel Sullivan on Alaska's [ranked-choice voting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranked-choice%5Fvoting%5Fin%5Fthe%5FUnited%5FStates?ref=dailybrief.net) ballot, the Justice Department on Friday sued to block certification of the state's upcoming U.S. Senate election if Republican incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan loses his race against Democrat Mary Peltola. \[[more](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=justice+department+lawsuit+alaska+senate+certification+daniel+j+sullivan&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]

The changes, effective October 30, follow criticism of the Canadian tariffs from Republican Senate candidates in close mid-term races. \[[White House fact sheet](https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2026/10/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-further-modifies-canadian-products-subject-to-tariffs-under-section-338/?ref=dailybrief.net)\] \[[more](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=trump+removes+canadian+products+tariffs+section+338+plywood+valves+carpets&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]

**ISRAEL** | Israelis vote tomorrow in the country's first national election since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack, in a race widely seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership. Polls suggest a close contest between Netanyahu's nationalist Likud party and the centrist Yashar! party of former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, in a campaign focused on Netanyahu's role in the security failures surrounding the October 7 attack, military service exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jews, and the government's 2023 judicial overhaul. Reports note that voters cast ballots for parties rather than individual candidates in Israeli elections, and that with no party expected to win a majority of the Knesset's 120 seats, the country's next prime minister is likely to be chosen by a coalition of parties. \[[more](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=israelis+vote+tuesday+first+election+since+october+7+referendum+netanyahu&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]

Machado had spent most of 2025 in hiding after being briefly detained following a protest against the swearing-in of then-President Nicolás Maduro, whose government had also barred her from leaving Venezuela. Her advisors say she will push for a date for free and fair elections. \[[more](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=machado+returns+venezuela+caracas+supporters&va=b&t=hc&df=w&ia=web&ref=dailybrief.net)\]
