Daily Brief Special Edition: Trump Wounded at Pennsylvania Rally

Presumptive 2024 Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump was wounded this evening in an apparent gunshot attack at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump was wounded this evening in an apparent gunshot attack at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

  • Trump appeared to be conscious as he was aided and removed from the location by Secret Service agents.
  • Details of the incident are scarce at present, but media reports have quoted Secret Service sources as saying the former president is "safe."

July 14, 9:25am Eastern: The FBI has named Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspected shooter behind the assassination attempt. In addition to former President Trump being wounded, causulties include: one rally attendee killed, two rally attendees seriously wounded, and the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, killed.

9:38pm Eastern: Former President Trump has left the Butler County, PA, medical facility where he was examined and treated following the shooting. Reports cite law enforcement officials as saying the suspected shooter was outside of the cordoned-off rally area and used a AR-15 style rifle in the attack.

8:51pm Eastern: In a statement posted online, former President Trump thanked Secret Service for their protective actions, extended his condolences to the family of the rally attendee who was killed, and also to the family of another attendee that was wounded, and confirmed that he had been shot in the right ear.

8:18pm Eastern: President Biden delivered brief remarks, condeming the violence, expressing his thanks that Donald Trump is OK, and that he hopes to speak with the former president later tonight.

8:01pm Eastern: Statement form former President Barack Obama: "There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy.... we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics."

7:59pm Eastern: President Biden says he has been briefed on the incident and is thankful fomer President Donald Trump is apparently doing well. Biden condemned the violence, saying there is not place in the U.S. democracy for such actions.

7:49pm Eastern: Law enforcement officials have reportedly confirmed that the shooting incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt.

7:35pm Eastern: The Associated Press cites a Butler County district attorney as saying that the apparent shooter and at least one rally attendee are dead following the shooting incident.

7:26pm Eastern: Media reports cites law enforcement sources as saying the suspected shooter in the incident was "neutralized."

7:05pm Eastern: Trump campaign officials say the former president is "fine" and is being "checked out at a local medical facility."
