• Palestinian health officials say at least 11 people have been killed since last night in new Israeli offensives that targeted Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp and the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya. [more]

• Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s top military commander, said yesterday that tens of thousands of Russian troops along with North Korean soldiers have been assembled in Russia’s western Kursk region in preparation for a counteroffensive aimed at driving Ukrainian forces out of the region. U.S. GUN VIOLENCE | One person was killed, and 16 others were injured, early Sunday in a shooting incident at Tuskegee University in Alabama. State authorities say Jaquez Myrick, 25, was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a machine gun as he left the scene of the campus shooting but have yet to charge him specifically with carrying out the attack. U.S. POLITICS | President-elect Donald Trump has announced former acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement director Tom Homan as his incoming administration's "border czar." Trump says that Homan, in addition to overseeing the U.S. northern and southern borders, will "be in charge of all deportation of illegal aliens back to their country of origin." Trump also announced that he will nominate New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. [more]

WISCONSIN | The Wisconsin Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments today on whether a state law passed in 1849 that criminalized abortion can still be enforced. A ruling in the case is not expected for several weeks. [more]

CALIFORNIA | The Mountain Fire in southern California’s Ventura County, which broke out last Wednesday, was considered 26% contained as of yesterday – up from 21% the previous day. The fire has burned about 32 square miles and destroyed more than 130 structures. [more]

NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY | Health advisories have been issued for parts of New York and northeastern New Jersey due to smoke from multiple wildfires in the region, including the Jennings Creek Wildfire, which had grown to about 4.7 square miles as of yesterday and in which one New York state parks employee was killed Saturday. U.S. OIL AND GAS | The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which oversees U.S. offshore oil and gas industries, says more than 25% of U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil and 16% of natural gas output remained offline as of yesterday due to tropical storm Rafael, which forced the evacuation of 37 of the region's 371 manned production platforms. COP29 | The annual United Nations climate summit opened today in Baku, Azerbaijan, with top agenda items for the two-weeks of talks including climate-related funding for poorer nations, development of clean energy, and compensation for climate disasters mostly triggered by carbon pollution from rich nations. CHINA | The Associated Press cites an analysis of satellite imagery and Chinese government documents as indicating that China has constructed a land-based prototype nuclear reactor for a large surface warship, which analysts say is a move toward producing the country’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. PAKISTAN | All train service to Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province has been suspended for four days following a suicide bombing at a train station in the provincial capital of Quetta on Saturday that killed 26 people and wounded at least 62 others. The Baloch Liberation Army separatist group has claimed responsibility for the attack. [more]

PHILIPPINES | Thousands of residents of the northeastern Philippines were ordered to evacuate yesterday ahead of the arrival of Typhoon Toraji, which struck the country’s Aurora province overnight and is forecast to move through the mountainous Luzon region before heading into the South China Sea. Toraji is the fourth major storm to hit the Philippines in the past month. [more]

FRANCE AND ISRAEL | Following anti-Israel violence after a soccer match last week in the Netherlands in which an Israeli team was playing, authorities in Paris, France, said yesterday that some 4,000 police officers will be deployed for a France vs. Israel UEFA Nations League match scheduled for Thursday. CHAD | Authorities in Chad say at least 17 soldiers and 96 Boko Haram insurgents were killed in a weekend attack by the rebel group in the Central African country’s Lake Chad region. [more]

HAITI | A decree firing interim Prime Minister Garry Conille and replacing him with businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé was signed by Haiti’s governing transitional council yesterday, according to reports. The decree is expected to be published later today. [more]

JAPAN | In a special parliamentary session today, the Japanese parliament reelected Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in a vote made necessary by Ishiba’s governing coalition’s loss of its majority in the 465-seat Lower House in last month’s national election. [more]
