  • U.S. forces struck multiple targets in Iran, and Iran responded with attacks on Gulf nations that host U.S. troops, after a U.S. Army helicopter was downed yesterday near the Strait of Hormuz. [more]
  • U.S. President Donald Trump said today that Iran would "have to pay the price" for taking too long to negotiate a deal to end the Middle East war, while Iran said it would reassess diplomatic engagement with the United Stats after what it called repeated U.S. cease-fire violations. [more]
  • Reports say two crew members aboard a Palau-flagged chemical and oil products tanker are missing, and one other was injured, after the vessel was hit today by a suspected U.S. missile in the Persian Gulf near Oman amidst the ongoing blockade of Iranian ports. [more]

UKRAINE | Today is day 1,565 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Here is your update:

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said today that long-range Ukrainian drones struck targets deep inside Russia overnight, including at a drone component factory in the Chuvashiya region and a refinery and other industrial sites in the Samara region. Russian officials say their air defenses shot down more than 300 Ukrainian drones during the wave of attacks. [more]

U.S. INFLATION | According to Labor Department data released today, consumer prices in the U.S. rose a three-year-high 4.2% in May, compared to the year-ago period – the third-straight monthly increase and up from a 3.8% annual increase in April. [full report] [more]

U.S. IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT | The House of Representatives voted, 214-212, yesterday to pass the Senate-approved $70 billion funding bill for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Border Patrol, and other related costs through the end of President Donald Trump's term in office. Trump is expected to sign the bill into law later today. [more]

MORE U.S. IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT | A Government Accountability Office report released yesterday concludes that mismanagement of the Camp East Montana immigration detention center in Texas created unsafe conditions that contributed to detainee deaths and suffering and wasted millions of dollars. Reports note that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has replaced the contractor running the facility, which was opened last year following an expedited contract award and construction schedule. CALIFORNIA | With about 91% of votes counted in California's all-party primary election, Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton are projected to face off in November's gubernatorial election. [more]

U.S. HEALTHCARE | According to an Associated Press report, Trump administration officials have warned more than 500 U.S. hospitals that they are failing to provide required basic pricing information to the public and face fines of up to $2 million annually if they continue to not provide transparent pricing. U.S. SOCIAL SECURITY | In their annual report to Congress, the trustees of the U.S. Social Security program said yesterday that, unless Congress acts, Social Security's combined trust fund reserves are projected to be able to pay 100% of total scheduled benefits through the third quarter of 2034, at which point there would be sufficient funds to pay only about 83% of scheduled benefits. U.S. AND CUBA | Lianys Torres Rivera, Cuba's ambassador to the United States, said in an interview yesterday that recent U.S. sanctions on Cuba and its indictment of former President Raul Castro are being used as a pretext to persuade the American people to support a U.S. military intervention in Cuba. PAKISTAN AND AFGHANISTAN | Following months of heightened tensions marked by sporadic outbreaks of fighting, Pakistan launched airstrikes on Afghanistan's eastern Khost, Kunar, and Paktika provinces today, targeting what Pakistani officials said were militant hideouts and infrastructure linked to recent attacks inside Pakistan. TAIWAN AND CHINA | In a second-straight day of military exercises, Taiwan launched rockets from U.S.-supplied HIMARS mobile launchers into the Taiwan Strait that separates the self-governing island from China today. Officials say the exercises, designed to simulate responses to a hypothetical Chinese attack, also included the firing of 155mm howitzers. [more]

WEST BANK | In a joint statement released yesterday, Australia, the U.K., Canada, France, Norway, and New Zealand announced new sanctions on various Israeli settlers, settlements, and entities in the West Bank over violence and human rights violations against Palestinians. [more]

NIGERIA | Medical charity Doctors Without Borders said yesterday that at least 74 people have died, and more than 7,000 others have been infected, in a cholera outbreak that started in May in Nigeria's Borno state. [more]

SOUTH AFRICA | According to local police, at least 10 suspects are believed to have taken part in a shooting incident last night in the Cleveland suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, in which at least 12 people were killed and nine others were wounded. Authorities say the motive behind the attack remains under investigation, while reports suggest the possible involvement of organized crime gangs. [more]

NORTHERN IRELAND | Several fires were set and demonstrators clashed with police overnight amidst anti-immigrant protests and violence in Belfast, Northern Ireland, sparked by a stabbing attack earlier this week in which a 30-year-old man from Sudan is alleged to have tried to kill a resident of Belfast. COLOMBIA | In a move environmental groups say is the first such nationwide effort, Colombia has enacted a law requiring government agencies and private businesses to integrate cattle-tracking, land ownership, and deforestation-monitoring systems to identify livestock linked to forest loss and keep them out of supply chains. SPACE | NASA yesterday introduced the four crew members for its upcoming Artemis III mission – a two-week endeavor scheduled for 2027 in which NASA’s Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, and Andre Douglas and the European Space Agency’s Luca Parmitano will orbit Earth while practicing docking their Orion capsule with two lunar landers.
